Basic Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

Course Objective:

This two day class will provide a practical understanding of geometric tolerancing that conforms to the ASME Y14.5M-2009 standard. The class will include lecture, videos, classroom discussion and workbook exercises which become an excellent resource for review and reference information upon completion of the class. Students will come away with an understanding of GD&T principles and applications, and will know how to interpret GD&T on engineering drawings. This course is ideal for design engineers, manufacturing and quality engineers and technicians, machinists, and quality control inspectors.

Some of the topics this course will cover are:

  • The basic terms and principles of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and why it has become an important engineering tool in manufacturing.
  • How GD&T is different from conventional coordinate system of dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • The purpose of a datum and identify datum features on a drawing.
  • The difference between maximum material condition and least material condition as they apply to external and internal part features.
  • The difference between clearance, interference and transition fits.
  • Determination of the size and boundaries of a geometric tolerance zone.
  • Definition of whether a bonus tolerance is allowed and, if so. How large.
  • The identification of the particular profile, runout or location tolerance being specified.
  • How each geometric tolerance is verified.
